The writing is strong, free of typos and syntax errors, even though the format is unusual with the changing points of view. The characters were well-crafted with interesting backgrounds and dialog that revealed character in a marvelous way. I would have given the book 5 stars except for the weak ending.I got the impression that this was a case of an author splitting his story in half so he could give away the first half, then charge full price for the second half. I wouldn't mind that so much if the author had explained his marketing ploy up front rather than conned his readers into investing their time in reading part of a story. I was disappointed when the story ended abruptly without closure, without resolution and without tying up loose ends.
After the last page, readers are invited to buy the next "book" to find out what happens in the story. A peek at the first chapter confirmed my suspicion that it was one book cut in half, because the story continued from where it had left off. I declined to buy the second half of the story as a protest against being suckered. The author should be straight with readers about his strategy so they don't feel tricked.

In A Small Town A Small Town Series Book 1 edition by Marc A DiGiacomo Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
I'm usually not a fan of detective books, but I may now become a fan after reading Mr DiGiacomo's books. Maybe I was reading the wrong authors before. I could hardly put books one and two down. The plot is really unique, finding out about the cop danny mello , and what a bad guy he was, was a surprise. One other reviewer was turned off by the language. Well, this was a realistic book about cops, and the language is to be expected as real cops do swear and make jokes when around of dead bodies. I truly wish there was going to be more than 3 books in this particular series. But I will just start reading an
this authors other books instead!
Distinct images stay with the recovering detective and are relived in the form of nightmares with chilling details of prior cases he has survived. I cant get the picture of a room full of killer cats surrounding the dessicated body of their owner out of my head. Or perhaps the male genitalia shoved into the mouth of a pedophile after his partner served him swift justice and sliced his throat, settling the matter out of court. These disturbing details are sandwiched between nostalgic family memories and humorous late night drinking stories with buddies after a hard day on the job. Kind of a different side to the typical detective mystery story. I liked it and can't wait to read more DiGiacomo.
I was not a huge fan of this book. It read quickly, and was good for passing the time. Two major issues detracted from my enjoying the book.
First, I didn't like the main character. I believe the author was trying to get away from typical novel cop-heroism by allowing the reader to glimpse the protagonist's fears. But I found that the character seemed rather whiney and self-centered, not a person whose head I enjoyed being in.
Second, and even more disappointing, was how predictable the ending was. The book is essentially running two storylines (and flashbacks) at the same time, and it is clear from the beginning where it is headed. I stuck through to the end hoping for a good twist, but it never materialized.
This is a book from the point of view of a policeman, and it makes a fairly good crime/suspense/mystery read. The characters are a bit two-dimensional, though that's the norm for the genre. I think I was most bothered by the lack of contractions where they would have been used by the POV character - "I will" instead of "I'll" - but other grammatical errors I decided to accept because a cop in that region might well say "for he and I."
The female characters are kind of stock, but then they're supposed to be, aren't they?
The use of Matt's bad dreams as a device to give us police-related vignettes was quite clever, I thought.
I wish I could rate this at 3.5, because it's really better than a mere 3, but not quite good enough for a 4. I do grade harshly, so if you're reading this review, I think you'll like this one if you like police novels.
Never seen anything like this. A book that ends in the middle of a story so that you can buy the sequel to read the rest. Never buy from this author again.
This is a decent book with an interesting plot. Detective Matt Longo is shot while going to get pizza, nearly dying and seeing his life change after that. His partner Donny, who's family is mobbed up, is MIA after going to Italy and Matt is worried the shooter will come back to finish the job. On top of that, Matt is approached by a beautiful FBI agent regarding an investigation into Donny.
This is an odd book to review. The plot is good but the end is anticlimactic. No spoilers here, but I kept expecting that one final twist and never got it. This is not an overly-complicated plot, and, in fact, things seem to happen just to happen. Case in point, the romance element just seems to materialize and doesn't seem realistic whatsoever. Another odd thing is that no one in this book ever used contractions — it was always "we are" instead of "we're" or "it is" instead of "it's." It just doesn't read as people really talk.
Ultimately, this is a light, easy read that keeps you wondering until late in the book. It's worth a read.
I didn't get very far. I hate to give up on a book, but I HATED the characters. In my opinion, they were cold, crass and callous. The cop was a jerk, his captain seemed to be a womanizer, and the EMTs were not kind, compassionate or professional. The cop and his EMT friend were trying to resuscitate an old woman, and they were making jokes about her as the woman's daughter walked in. The EMT that helped her out made faces and stuck her tongue out at the cop.
Maybe I'm a bit nit-picky, but I like to connect to, or at the very least sympathize with the characters. I couldn't do that and they were pissing me off instead. The plot might have had some potential if it hadn't moved at a snail's pace. Plus the cop kept whining about how he was shot. Understandable, but it got old fast.

The characters were well-crafted with interesting backgrounds and dialog that revealed character in a marvelous way. I would have given the book 5 stars except for the weak ending.
